From the very beginning we wanted Nicky, who is essentially Barbie. We continued to refine the idea so that it would turn over Barbie girl. We knew we would love it and that Greta would love it, but it was hard to see it come to fruition.
They go on to explain what they had to do to get the artist:
We went to Greta and asked her to write a letter to Niki. Greta wrote this beautiful letter in which she essentially said: “You are Queen Barb, and when I was thinking about this film and the artists I would like to see, you were the first person who came to mind as someone who I felt could be an important collaborator and make an important contribution.” . We sent this letter to Niki, and the next day she replied that she 100% agreed.
