There’s a spooky trend in the makeup world for the season – long, dark, spidery lashes that look more beautiful than they look!
The trend has gone viral on TikTok and was perfectly showcased by Doja Cat with her iconic makeup look at the recent MTV VMAs.
However, the look isn’t as easy as waving a mascara wand, but fear not! A top makeup artist shares some simple steps to achieve spider lashes just in time for Halloween!

Professional makeup artist Saffron Hughes of FalseEyelashes.co.uk says there are some easy ways to achieve Doja Cat’s spidery look.
To bring life back to tired lashes, Saffron shares this tip: “Before applying the first coat of mascara, wipe off any excess product from your mascara wand with a tissue. This ensures that your lashes remain separated for maximum volume. “
Saffron says most makeup users tend to comb their mascara wand upward during application, but there’s another trick you can try to achieve a more voluminous look.
“Once your initial coat of mascara has dried, enhance your lashes for maximum length and volume, paying special attention to each individual lash. Focus on brushing the outer lashes outwards, avoiding upward movements.
“Then gently bring your inner lashes to the inner corner of your brow. This technique creates the illusion of fuller lashes by pulling them in a straight line from the roots,” explains Shafran.
According to Saffron, to achieve spider lashes, you need to create a nice thickness without the risk of looking too clogged. “To achieve the ideal level of thickness, apply mascara by gently pressing it into the base of your lash line. Repeating this movement 5-10 times gives the roots of the lashes a fuller appearance.”
We witnessed Zendaya effortlessly rock those thicker, separated lashes at the SAG Awards in February, proving that the way you apply mascara can truly transform your look!
“The key to creating spider lashes is adding distinctive, eye-catching segments along the lash line,” adds Shafran.
She says you can use tweezers to squeeze sections of the lashes together to create a pointed effect. These sections can be enhanced by adding individual lashes strategically placed along each lash line.
“MUA Doja Cat used this technique by placing individual lashes at the inner, center and outer corners of the eye. Choose a clear-colored lash adhesive for a flawless, seamless finish,” she adds.
To use eyelash glue effectively, Shafran advises applying a minimal amount of glue in a thin, precise layer at the base of each individual lash.
“Wait about a minute for the glue to become tacky. This step ensures that the lashes stay firmly in place during application. Do not blow on the glue to prevent germs from entering the eye area.”
To make your eyes look even wider, Shafran recommends applying eyeliner along the outer third of your lash line. “This technique increases the thickness of the lashes on the outer third of the eye, resulting in a wider, more youthful appearance.”
