A poll in favor of the vaginal condom

A study revealed that 96% of women between 18 and 29 years of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) who tried the vaginal condom (PF / V) would recommend it, and they were in favor of “incorporating it as one more option within the basket of contraceptive supplies to which people have effective access “.

The report called “Acceptability of the vaginal condom among adolescent and young women of the AMBA”, carried out by the United Nations Population Fund in Argentina (Unfpa), UNAIDS and the Ministry of Health of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, shows by For the first time in Argentina, the high level of acceptability of the vaginal condom (also called internal or female) for the prevention of pregnancy, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

The presentation of the research was attended by Harold Robinson, Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (Unfpa) for Latin America and the Caribbean; Mariana Isasi, Head of Office of Unfpa Argentina; Alberto Stella, Director of UNAIDS for Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay; Fabián Portnoy, from the Coordination of Sexual Health, HIV and STIs of the Buenos Aires Ministry of Health; and Cecilia Straw, principal investigator, among others.

During the meeting held in a hotel in downtown Buenos Aires, it was concluded that the result of the study shows “a change in acceptance and highlights the importance of the autonomy it provides for those who participated in the research”, since in previous studies “there had been no had good results. “

Regarding the use of the PF / V in other countries, they indicated that Uruguay, Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador would implement the use of these, that is to say that “our country is backward.”

On the other hand, they highlighted that the only FP / V that is approved by the World Health Organization is the one used in the research -FC2 Female Condom, made with synthetic rubber (not latex) that is used inside the vagina – and that, unlike the penile presentations “they are much more complex, expensive to manufacture and cost between 7 and 8 times more”.

Likewise, they assured that the effectiveness is “very high” more than 90% but it cannot be achieved in the country.

The exploratory, descriptive, quali-quantitative participatory study was developed between March 2020 and August 2021 and included the donation of 2,000 condoms by Unfpa.

To carry it out, a sample of 100 women (with and without HIV), between 18 and 29 years old, residing in the AMBA, sexually active and who had vaginal-penile penetration intercourse was established.

The call and follow-up of the participants was carried out together with 13 referents from various civil organizations and the research was carried out in three stages.

Determining high acceptability: 98% considered that it should be incorporated into public policy, 97% stated that their sexual partner accepted its use, 96% would recommend it, 80% would use it again and, although 68% referred difficulties in the first placement practice, when they subsequently used it in sexual intercourse, this percentage dropped to 36%.

Meanwhile, they affirm that one of the benefits that most encourages women is that it can be self-administered by women and people with a vagina, and that caring for sexuality will not depend on another person but on the exercise of one’s own autonomy.
