The 38-year-old son of Princess Diana and Prince Charles has welcomed the launch of a new investigation into BBC journalist Martin Bashir, who recorded an exclusive interview with his mother.

Prince William commented for the first time on the news that the BBC has launched a new investigation into Panorama journalist Martin Bashir, who has done a historic interview. In an official statement, he called the investigation “a step in the right direction,” according to People.

Welcoming the investigation, the Duke of Cambridge said: “An independent investigation is a step in the right direction. It should help establish the truth behind the actions that led to the Panorama interview and the subsequent decisions taken by the BBC staff at the time. ”

Recall that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the release of the scandalous interview of Princess Diana, in which she frankly spoke about the problems in her relationship with Prince Charles and the reasons for the divorce.

In November, Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, demanded that the BBC re-investigate the organization of an interview recorded by Martin Bashir in 1995. He suggests that in order to obtain an exclusive interview, Bashir falsified financial documents, thanks to which Princess Diana agreed to a public conversation. These documents contained financial statements that the royal palace was paying two of her high-ranking courtiers to sell information about her to the newspapers.

This is not the first investigation the BBC has conducted into Bashir and this interview at the request of Charles Spencer. For example, in 1996 an internal investigation showed that the forged documents were “ irrelevant” to the interview.

The BBC announced a new investigation.

It is noteworthy that the scandal surrounding the interview 25 years ago unfolds against the backdrop of the release of the fourth season of the TV series Crown, which tells about Queen Elizabeth and the royal family. In the season that covers the period from 1979 to 1990, Princess Diana appears for the first time.
