Far-right minister Ben Gvir, who remains on the agenda in Israel due to his anti-Palestinian statements, threatened to dissolve the coalition government led by Benjamin Netanyahu.
Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who is known for his far-right views, described the cessation of attacks on Gaza as the “disintegration” of his government in his post on the social media platform X.
Ben Gvir said in his blog post: “Stop the war (attacks on Gaza) = dissolve the government.”
If his party withdraws, the government may be dissolved
In order to form a coalition government in Israel, it is necessary to obtain the support of 61 representatives, which is an absolute majority in the 120-seat parliament. The number of seats for the parties that form the coalition government led by Netanyahu is 64 seats. The “Otzma Yehudit” (Jewish Power) party led by Ben Gvir, which is in the coalition, has 5 deputies.
The Israeli army launched attacks on the Gaza Strip on October 7, following the attack launched by Hamas. As part of the prisoner exchange agreement reached between Israel and Hamas, mediated by Qatar and Egypt, clashes in Gaza were suspended for 4 days on November 24. After the talks, this humanitarian truce was extended for another two days.
The Israeli press also reflected Netanyahu’s concern about a coup against him from within the Likud Party, which he heads. (aa)
