Swine flu

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reported a case of swine flu in a worker at a farm in Lleida, but no further cases have been detected in the region.

The Spanish authorities reported the outbreak on January 29, which was published in the ECDC weekly report, corresponding to the week of January 28 to February 3.

The patient had no history of underlying diseases and developed symptoms (cough with mucopurulent sputum, fever, malaise, and myalgia) on November 25. Chest X-ray revealed no evidence of pneumonia, and the patient was diagnosed with bronchitis on outpatient visit.

However, the ECDC reported that on December 12, samples of nasal and oropharyngeal secretions tested positive for influenza A, and upon more detailed analysis, swine influenza A (H1N1) was identified.

Passive surveillance of possible victims in the work environment

Sources from the Governor’s Department of Health said that when cases of human-to-human infection are detected, it is necessary to conduct contact tracing and implement control measures to prevent human-to-human transmission.

The regional epidemiological surveillance agency conducted an epidemiological investigation into the case and conducted contact studies, but no new cases were found in the surrounding environment or among farm colleagues. To date, there is still passive surveillance of potentially affected persons in the work environment.

The Department of Health recommends that people who work on farms, poultry or pig operations or come into contact with wild animals get a flu shot.
