Jaabis, who suffered burns to her face and lost some fingers, is often hailed during demonstrations or to express the suffering of Palestinian prisoners.
The Israeli prison service announced early Sunday that it had released 39 Palestinians. Television footage showed a number of released people being welcomed into their homes in occupied East Jerusalem.
The most notable of those released is Israa Jaabis (38), convicted of exploding a gas cylinder in her car at a checkpoint in 2015, injuring a policeman, and was sentenced to 11 years in prison.
A large number of Israeli security personnel were seen in Jaabis’ house wearing helmets and carrying weapons.
Jaabis, who suffered burns to his face and lost some fingers, has often waved his photo during demonstrations or to express the suffering of Palestinian prisoners.
“We are ashamed to rejoice when all of Palestine is hurt,” Jaabis told reporters at the family home in the Jabal Mukaber neighborhood, with her son Moatasem (13) beside her, adding: “Everyone must be released.”
The non-governmental organization Addameer, which provided her with a lawyer, said she suffered burns covering 50% of her body. According to the Palestinian authorities, she needs six surgeries.
In occupied East Jerusalem, the freed prisoners, all women and young people under 19, are celebrated in secret, in the presence of the Israeli police.
