After breaking Wizards curse, Anthony Edwards echoes Michael Jordan ad while hinting at sneaker fetish

Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards is fulfilling his potential as the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. His performance earned him widespread recognition, including a shoe collaboration with Adidas.

The young NBA player already has his first signature sneaker, the AE1, which will go on sale Thursday, with additional colorways to follow.

The Timberwolves guard wore his AE1 jersey against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday, and he was able to do something he’s never done in his young career: beat the Washington Wizards.

As crazy as it sounds, Edwards had never beaten the Wizards before his most recent game, and since sports fans and athletes are a superstitious bunch, this poor record was blamed on a curse.

After his first career win over the Wizards, the young star took the time to give credit where credit is due.

“It’s the shoe,” was all he said, referring to the AE1s he wore during the game.

Edwards’ reaction was similar to Michael Jordan’s old “It’s Gotta Be The Shoes” commercial.

Anthony Edwards had a big scoring night wearing AE1 against the Wizards

Anthony Edwards leads the Timberwolves in scoring this season (25.8 points per game in 41 games), and his performance against the Wizards proved it. Edwards led all scorers with 38 points as the Wolves won 118-107.

This was a nice bounce-back performance for him, as he only allowed nine points in their last game, a 128-125 loss to the Charlotte Hornets.

His 30-point outburst was the 16th time this season that he scored 30 or more points in a game.

In his NBA rookie season, he averaged 19.3 points per game, leading all rookies. He was also the only rookie in that class to score over 1,000 points, finishing the season with 1,392 points.

Since then, he has continued to grow as a scorer, with his points per game increasing with each season he plays. In his sophomore season, he averaged 21.3 points per game. Last year, his scoring average rose to 24.6 points per game, and this year it rose to 28.5 points.

Anthony Edwards also proved that he is not a one-dimensional player, averaging 5.2 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game this year.
