How rising air pollution is accelerating health risks
Every winter, air quality in India’s Delhi-National Capital Region region suffers, largely due to stubble burning. Dense fog filled with particulate matter can pose serious cardiovascular risks, especially for people with heart disease. Most at risk are people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and those who have had heart surgery. Air pollution is as harmful to heart health as second-hand smoke, and is particularly harmful to smokers. While preventive measures can help mitigate risks, long-term solutions are needed to address the root causes of contamination. Government efforts to tackle pollution have been controversial, and stricter enforcement of environmental regulations and investments in sustainable practices are critical to cleaning the air.
White House: “Hospitals and patients must be protected”
The White House has stressed the need to protect hospitals and patients amid Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza. The operation included troops entering Al-Shifa, Gaza’s largest hospital, targeting a command center said to be hidden beneath the facility. A White House spokesperson said they do not support attacks on hospitals or seeing innocent people caught in the crossfire. The statement came after a phone call between U.S. President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during which the hospital surgery was not discussed. Reports describe dire conditions inside hospitals, including medical procedures without anesthesia and families lacking food and water.
WHO: Evacuation of vulnerable Gaza hospital patients ‘impossible’
The World Health Organization (WHO) says it is impossible to move the most vulnerable patients from Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital. The Israeli mission in Geneva criticized the World Health Organization, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA and the International Committee of the Red Cross for criticizing Israel’s call for civilians and patients to leave hospitals. The World Health Organization believes that transferring patients could lead to their death and stresses that hospitals should never be attacked. Israel denies attacking Shifa hospital and has called on residents of the northern Gaza Strip to move south.
