She shared with GQ,

“The studio had a script for Alice for a long time, and then they offered me the role of Alice. I thought about it, but I felt like in The Princess Diaries I was there, playing the role of a beautiful girl in a fairy dress.”

“However, I told the studio that if they eventually find a director, I would be interested in playing the White Queen later.”

In an interview, the actress explained how she got the role in Tim Burton’s film.

“When Tim came on board, he had the cast he wanted, and of course that didn’t include me. But the other actress who was nominated had scheduling conflicts, so the studio stepped in and nominated me.”

She remembered:

“I talked to Tim on the phone and he liked my version. I wanted the queen to be a cross between Debbie Harry, Greta Garbo and David Bowie, with a little Dan Flavin thrown in for good measure.”

Alice in Wonderland was released in 2010 and grossed $1 billion on a $200 million budget. It is available to stream on Disney+.
