The health authorities of chili detected the first case of the omicron variant in the capital, Santiago de Chile. The 65-year-old man had no contact with travelers arriving in the country, being the first infected by transmission of this covid mutation.
The Regional Ministerial Secretariat (Seremi) from Metropolitan Region Health reported the case through a public statement released on Sunday night revealing the detection of the variant after a genomic sequencing carried out by the Institute of Public Health (ISP).
“It corresponds to a 65-year-old patient, with a significant morbid history, who is hospitalized in a healthcare center in the region. According to him National Immunization Registry (RNI), does not have a vaccination record against Covid-19? “, says the document.
The epidemiological investigation showed that there are five close contacts of the case who “have already completed their home quarantine.”
“The investigation is ongoing, to date no epidemiological link with travelers has been identified”, is added in the statement.
In the country, 7 cases have been detected throughout the country and an increase in infections is expected due to the mobility of people that occurs by the end of the year due to the intensification of commercial activity.

To date, 91.3% of the target population – about 15 million people – have a full vaccination schedule and 8.9 million have received a booster dose.
