From September 22, 2023 on the Disney+ platform arrived half a horror, sci-fi and psychological drama film which attracted the curious glances of many exceptional spectators. The first curiosity worth paying attention to is No one will save you the fact is that in 93 minutes of dialogue only five words said: the rest is all a groan or a cry of fear. Interesting, but not unique element in the world of cinema: from the cult Doctor Caligari’s office before Quiet 2016 (no dialogue, only written texts, since the main character is a deaf writer), creating a terrifying or disturbing atmosphere without using words is a hobby that has amazed many. However, in this case it has a deliberately metaphorical meaning.

Main character Brynn, a young woman living in complete isolation. from the rest of her classic American small town where everyone knows everyone and no one can forgive her for a mistake/horror from her past. The girl works as a seamstress by mail, but when it comes to a trip to the city, you can feel all her discomfort and, above all, the contemptuous looks of people. In this context, this is someone else’s body and – ipse dixit – she is visited by aliens.

No one will save you (Trailer HERE) plunder most of the sci-fi genre’s alien-related filmography, but with packaging movie home invasion who incredibly manages to stand on his own two feet and rarely lose their inner balance: Brynn is an accidental heroine who, when the grays invade the house, somehow manages to defeat them and escape from their “domain.” From Invasion of the Body Snatchers To Visitorspassing through Signs and the recent great Quiet place and its sequels, there’s no shortage of visual references here, but Duffield’s real thematic core is different.

Following the narrative framework favored above all by A24, the dual genre of horror and sci-fi appears here. inclined to create a metaphor which prompts us to think about the very concept of alienation and, above all, about forgiveness. Self-forgiveness comes first: Brynn’s isolation is not only physical, but also emotional. The girl cannot forgive herself for what she has done and only thanks to this collision with alien creatures does she somehow come to terms with herself.

Really, No one will save you not very good at making this parallelism plausible: these two aspects, that ishome invasion with classic but hierarchically well-characterized aliens and psychological drama – are interesting in their own right, but never fit together perfectly unless you give up the pretense of rationalism and accept the idea that Brian Duffield’s intention is to move between gray areas (like aliens) and other reading plans range from the very literal to the extremely surreal

Intriguing, often restless and driven forward by one good control of action and stage space, always finding different solutions that, if not reasonable, are at least interesting. Nobody’s Gonna Save You belongs to the same production line that took Disney+ (and Hulu and Star+ overseas) just last year. Princessanother movie with unusual female protagonist and the whole idea of ​​revising the standard genre – in this case, the fairy tale met the “beating” cinema. It won’t go down in history as the most revolutionary sci-fi horror ever made, but it’s honest in its claims and has a length (90 minutes, an absolute rarity or almost these days) that makes it perfect for an autumn evening at home.
