The long-awaited Venice Film Festival 2023 is just around the corner and is ready to delight film lovers around the world with an eclectic selection of international cinematic works. The competition films have been selected from among the best Italian and foreign submissions, promising a fierce and stimulating competition. In addition, the presence of numerous distinguished guests makes this 80th edition even more highly anticipated and special, with the thrill of discovering the work of new talents and recognized icons.
From August 30 to September 9, 2023, the Venice Lido will become the beating heart of international cinema. Film screenings, special events and award ceremonies fill the ten-day calendar, offering visitors an unforgettable experience and a comprehensive overview of the latest film trends.
The prestige of the 80th Venice Film Festival is further enhanced by the choice of a godmother, Caterina Murino. The Sardinian actress, with her talent and charm, will host the opening and closing evenings of the Venice International Film Festival. The opening ceremony will take place on June 30, 2023 in the evocative Sala Grande Palazzo del Cinema, and on September 9, at the same location, Caterina Murino will preside over the closing ceremony, announcing the winners of the prestigious Golden Lion and other awards.
As we prepare to open titles in the competition, it is worth noting that some of the films out of competition will also attract the attention of the public. Among them, Woody Allen’s new work Accidental Impact, Roman Polanski’s evocative The Palace, and Liliana Cavani’s Order of Time, which will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, represent another opportunity to immerse yourself in quality cinematic art.

The Venice Film Festival 2023 boasts a diverse and prestigious jury of internationally renowned talent. The jury of the official competition is headed by the famous American director Damien Chazelle, known for such masterpieces as La La Land. Alongside him we see talented Palestinian actor Saleh Bakri, New Zealand director Jane Campion, who made history by winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes for Piano in 1993, and French director Mia Hansen-Löwe. The presence of the talented Italian director and actor Gabriele Mainetti, best known for My Name is Jig Robot and The Freaks, gives the jury a touch of national pride. Complementing the group are Irish screenwriter Martin McDonagh, Argentine screenwriter/director Santiago Mitre, American director Laura Poitras, and charming Chinese actress Shu Qi.
The experimental section of Orizzonti also has a high-level jury chaired by Jonas Carpignano. Working with him are personalities such as Kauter Ben Hania, Kalil Joseph, Jean-Paul Salome and Trisha Tuttle, who will help select the most innovative and creative works for the exhibition.
Venice’s first film award “Luigi De Laurentiis” – “The Lion of the Future”, awarded to the first works of emerging directors, will be judged by a competent jury headed by director Alice Diop. Together with her experts like Faouzi Bensaidi, Laura Citarella, Andrea De Sica and Chloe Domon will choose the best of the new film talents.
The prizes awarded by the jury of the Venice Film Festival 2023 are of great importance on the international film scene. Among the most coveted awards are the Golden Lion for Best Film, the Silver Lion for the Grand Jury Prize, the Silver Lion for Best Director, the Volpi Cups for Best Actress and Actor, the Special Jury Prize and the Prize for Best Screenplay. In addition, the Marcello Mastroianni Award will be given to an aspiring young actor or actress in recognition of their promising talent.
The Venice Film Festival 2023 will enliven the presence of distinguished guests. Among them is the godmother of the festival, the charming Italian actress Caterina Murino, along with renowned director Liliana Cavani and renowned actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai, both awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. In addition to them, the list of stars expected on the red carpet includes such big names as Michael Fassbender, Adam Driver, Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Jessica Chastain, Bradley Cooper and Tilda Swinton. There are no less Italian guests: figures such as Pietro Castellitto, Benedetta Porcaroli, Pierfrancesco Favino, Toni Servillo and Valerio Mastandrea add charm and flair to the event.
The official poster for the 2023 Venice Film Festival, created by Italian illustrator Lorenzo Mattotti, is inspired by the tradition of cinema on the road. The chosen image evokes a sense of freedom, adventure and the discovery of new worlds through the seventh art. The number “80” on the license plate of the car symbolizes an important milestone of the 80th Venice Film Festival.
