The trailer for the new film by Hayao Miyazaki, one of the most famous and beloved animated film directors in the world, has been released. The original title of the film is Kimitachi wa Do Ikiru ka, or “How do you live?”, and in English this was translated as boy and heron: in Italy it will be distributed under the name boy and heron and will be released on January 1, 2024.
boy and heron highly anticipated because this is Miyazaki’s first work since The wind is getting stronger, released in 2013, ten years ago. The action takes place in Japan during World War II and is somewhat autobiographical. It stars a boy named Mahito, whose mother died in a fire and whose father works in a military aircraft factory. Mahito’s father remarries his wife’s sister, Natsuko, and moves his family to a house in the countryside. There, Mahito discovers a mysterious tower and meets a talking heron who claims that his mother is alive and held captive in the tower. When Natsuko enters the tower without leaving it, the boy decides to follow her to save her and finds himself in a fantasy world.
So far, the film has only been released in Japan, where it achieved great success despite lack of publicity. On September 22, it will be presented for the first time in Europe at the San Sebastian Film Festival, in the Basque Country, Spain.
