The United States has said it is trying to form an international coalition to fight what it calls the “financing network” of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), while France has called for an international “coalition” to “fight” this movement, not just financially.
The French news agency quoted US Treasury Undersecretary Wally Adeyemo as saying yesterday, Tuesday, that he will travel to Europe (starting on) Friday and meet with what he described as allies and partners to discuss what they can do in a coordinated way to deal with Hamas’s “financial network”.
He added: “Our goal is to build an alliance with countries in the region but also around the world to fight its financing.”
Adeyemo also said that in recent years the United States has “imposed a series of sanctions on Hamas,” which “like no other party, has designed and tried to find ways to circumvent our sanctions,” including through cryptocurrencies.
Yesterday, French President Emmanuel Macron proposed that an international “coalition” – not only financially but also on a larger scale – take up the “fight” against Hamas.
According to those close to Macron, this means creating a new coalition, that is, expanding the coalition in place since 2014 to fight ISIS in Syria and Iraq to include the fight against Hamas.
Without commenting on the French president’s statements, Adeyemo stressed that “the strategy used to deal with ISIS and other terrorist groups is the strategy we must use.”
The Treasury Undersecretary indicated that additional economic sanctions should be imposed and that “some” other “tools” should be used against Hamas.
These efforts come after the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, launched the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation on the 7th of this month, followed by Israel launching a war in the Gaza Strip that left thousands martyred and wounded, and caused great destruction of buildings.
