During the evening, the award-winning director Taika Waititi presented Ava DuVernay with the Inspiration Award. Accepting the award, Ava opened up about what it means to truly inspire someone, saying that it was her aunt Denise who first screened her West Side Story, which ignited her passion for filmmaking. Her new film Origins, officially listed at the Venice Film Festival, explores the themes of social justice, and DuVernay mentioned the fact that the fight against HIV/AIDS is an integral part of the global fight for social justice; Around 40 million people worldwide are living with HIV, more than half of them in suburban Africa.
Auctioneer Michael Macaulay hosted a live auction that featured a variety of contemporary art as well as unique luxury items and experiences.
