According to authorities, 295 days have passed in 2023, and an average of 21 people are dying violently every day in Ecuador.
The number of violent deaths in Ecuador has not stopped growing.
Between January 1 and October 18, 2023, 6,044 people this they murdered in different provinces of the country.
In other words, during these 295 days, 21 violent deaths occurred in the country every 24 hours.
This number also reflects that every 69 minutes there is one person murdered in our country.
If that average stays the same, the country could hit a record 7,607 murders in a single year for the rest of the year.
For all of 2022, there were 4,603 violent deaths, an increase of 65.3%.
However, if compared to 2019 (the last year before the Covid-19 pandemic), the increase would be 540.9%.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Organized Crime (UNODC), violence and crime in a country is measured by the death rate per 100,000 inhabitants.
This metric allows comparison with other countries, regardless of each country’s size and population.
If the average number of daily violent deaths registered in Ecuador as of October 18 remains unchanged, the country’s fatality rate in 2023 will reach 44.9 murder per 100,000 inhabitants.
This is arguably the worst number in the country’s history.
Furthermore, according to these data, Ecuador has become the most violent country in Latin America, which in turn is the most violent region in the world.
According to Insight Crime, an organization that monitors violence in Latin America, the most violent countries in the region in 2022 are Venezuela, with a violence rate of 40.4, and Honduras, with a rate of 35.8.
And globally, Ecuador is probably the fifth most violent country.
