Announcement on Influenza Vaccine Ingredient Recommendations for the Northern Hemisphere 2024-2025 Influenza Season

The World Health Organization (WHO) today announced recommendations for the viral composition of influenza vaccines for the 2024-2025 influenza season in the Northern Hemisphere. The announcement was made at a briefing at the end of a four-day meeting on flu vaccine ingredients. The conference is held twice a year, one for the Southern Hemisphere and one for the Northern Hemisphere.

WHO organized these consultations with expert advisory groups from WHO Collaborating Centers and WHO Essential Regulatory Laboratories to analyze influenza virus surveillance data generated by the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (SMVRG). State vaccine regulators and pharmaceutical companies use the published recommendations to develop, manufacture, and license influenza vaccines for the upcoming flu season.

The viruses contained in influenza vaccines need to be updated regularly to ensure their effectiveness because influenza viruses, including those that circulate in and infect humans, are constantly evolving.

Produced from embryonated eggs:

• A strain similar to A/Victoria/4897/2022 (H1N1)pdm09,
• Strain similar to A/Thai/8/2022 (H3N2) and
• A strain similar to B/Austria/1359417/2021 (B/Victoria lineage).

Recombinants or recombinants produced in cell culture:

• A strain similar to A/Wisconsin/67/2022 (H1N1)pdm09m,
• Strain similar to A/Massachusetts/18/2022 (H3N2) and
• A strain similar to B/Austria/1359417/2021 (B/Victoria lineage).
