In a landmark case, a court in Germany on Thursday sentenced a Syrian colonel to life in prison for crimes against humanity.

Anwar Raslan, 58, was linked to the torture of more than 4,000 people in Syria’s civil war in a prison known as “hell on Earth”.

The trial, held at the Koblenz Territorial Court, It is the first criminal case brought in the world for state-directed torture in Syria.

It is hard to imagine what the men and women imprisoned in Syria’s notorious Al Khatib prison had to endure.
