Danish group Aqua broke the silence using their song barbie girl to the cinema Barbie Greta Gerwig.
The song, released in 1997, was a great success, so many expected to see it in the film and were somewhat satisfied. barbie girl featured on the remix with Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice.
In an interview with The Guardian, Aqua member Lene Nyström explained that they did not initially believe that their song would be featured in the film.
We thought it would be like butter on bacon. We knew very well that they needed something new and fresh. And then, just two months ago, we were asked to collaborate with Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice. It happened very quickly.
The presence of the song was not taken for granted, as Aqua had a longstanding feud with Mattel dating back to 1997. barbie girl came out, in fact Mattel lashed out at the group, accusing them of sexualizing the doll.
René Dif, another member of Aqua, commented on the song’s presence in the film and the peace with Mattel with these words:
It was nice to see how Mattel came up to us and said: “Hi, this is good.”
