On a conservation trip to the African country, the actress suffered a fall and a broken leg.
Ashley Judd has been hospitalized in South Africa after breaking her leg and sustaining “catastrophic injuries” following a conservation trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Double Jeopardy star was on one of her regular trips to the rainforest to help protect the bonobo, an endangered great ape, when she tripped over a fallen tree and fell awkwardly, breaking her leg in four places and leaving her with nerve damage.
Judd revealed all about the drama in an Instagram live chat with his friend and New York Times reporter Nicholas Kristof on Friday when he shared his story from his hospital bed in a trauma intensive care unit in South Africa, where he had been transported.
After a 55-hour nightmare, she admitted that she had to chew on a stick to deal with the pain coursing through her body, which began to go into shock as she and her two companions waited five hours for help.
She was then put in a hammock for transport, before hopping onto the back of a motorcycle for an hours-long journey to seek medical attention and eventually flown to South Africa to undergo surgery.
“I held my broken tibia with my hands while we were driving…”, he explained about the motorcycle trip.
“The entire evacuation lasted 55 hours. I almost lost my leg. ”
Judd insists that she is grateful that she can afford disaster insurance to pay for her emergency care after that “incredibly harrowing” experience because she knows the locals would not be so lucky.
“I am with a lot of love. I have a lot of compassion and I am very grateful, ”said the actress. “I thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and support.”
