Africa (and Nigeria in particular) is counting down its musical successes this year.

Nominations and awards are now pouring in for Burna Boy at every opportunity for music recognition, from the MTV Music Awards to the BET to the Grammys. Tems received a statuette at the last Grammy Awards for Wait for yousung with Drake.

Rema broke all world records with his Calm down, which topped all the charts and reached a billion streams on Spotify. A few days ago, together with his co-star Selena Gomez, he charmed the MTV Music Awards, where he won in the Best Afrobeat category, with a deep gratitude to all the artists who came before him.

Now, at the Africa Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA), now a beacon of recognition for African musical talent, the continent is celebrating the talents that make it so famous around the world. The ceremony took place on September 17 last year in Texas, USA.

Not only afrobeats

AFRIMMA presents awards in a variety of categories, recognizing excellence in various musical genres and celebrating new artists alongside established ones.

This year’s standout honorees of course included Burna Boy, who took home the Artiste of the Year award, and Tiwa Savage, who was named Best Female Artiste. Wizkid won the Best Collaboration award for the song. Essence and Diamond Platnumz were awarded “Best Song of the Year” for Vaa.

Promoting African unity through music

One of the most important aspects of AFRIMMA is their ability to promote African unity through music. The event saw artists from different parts of the continent perform together and take to the stage in a show of solidarity and cooperation. This celebration of African unity highlighted the importance of music in bridging cultural barriers and creating a sense of community. (AB)
