Australian Open director Craig Tiley says Coco Gauff and Carlos Alcaraz are seen as potential heirs to the legacy of legends Serena and Venus Williams, as well as those from the Big Three era : Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
Gauff and Alcaraz are two of the most talented young men in tennis right now. While the American recently captured her first Grand Slam title at the US Open, Alcaraz ended Djokovic’s 34-match winning streak at Wimbledon to win his first major title of the year at the iconic Grand Slam. Craig Tiley, who is in charge of preparations for the 2024 Australian Open, stressed that Gauff and Alcaraz have the potential to succeed the Williams sisters and continue the glorious legacy of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray.
“On the men’s and women’s sides, there are quite a few. Some guys are starting to claim to be the clear heirs to that. I think Coco and Carlos are probably the two guys leading the way on that. But the line-up is broad, which is great,” Craig Tiley said in an interview with Craig Gabriel at the 2023 Laver Cup.
The world of tennis is in a state of constant change, with established players cementing their legends and newcomers rising to prominence.
In recent years, however, the tennis world has said goodbye to legends such as Serena Williams, Roger Federer and Ashleigh Barty, leaving a void.

On the women’s side, Serena Williams and Venus Williams have continued their dominance for nearly two decades and have been replaced by Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka and Emerging stars such as Elena Rybakina took over, bringing new energy to the sport.
This year, the WTA has witnessed four different champions at major events, highlighting competition among the talent pool vying for top honors.
As the season finale approaches and the new year approaches, players are gearing up to end their respective seasons on a high note and prepare for the challenges and opportunities next year.
