Authorities in Vienna have opened an account on the OnlyFans adult platform. Protest against art censorship on social networks

In July, the TikTok account of the Albertina Museum was suspended and then blocked because it displayed works by Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki showing a hidden female breast. The account closure came after a similar incident in 2019, when Instagram ruled that a painting by Peter Paul Rubens violated platform standards that prohibit any depiction of nudity – even those that are “artistic in nature.”

In 2018, a photo posted by the History Museum depicting the 25,000-year-old Venus of Willendorf figurine was considered pornographic by Facebook and removed from the platform, reports The Guardian.

Helena Hartlauer, a spokeswoman for the Vienna Tourism Council, said the city and its cultural institutions found it “almost impossible” to use nude artwork in promotional materials.

“These works of art are crucial and important to Vienna – when you think of Schiele’s self-portrait from 1910, it is one of the most iconic works of art. It is unfair and frustrating not to be able to use them on a communication tool such as social media. That’s why we thought of OnlyFans: finally, a way to show these things. ”

First subscribers to OnlyFans’ “Vienna Content 18+” will receive a bonus of either a Vienna City Card or an entrance ticket to see one of the works of art in person.

The Tourism Council is renewing its efforts to promote Vienna as a travel destination, as the Austrian government has relaxed border restrictions for foreign nationals. Arrivals decreased by 78.4% in 2020 compared to 2019.
