Avian Influenza: Multisectoral simulation to be conducted for possible human cases | OMSA | Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza | Avian Influenza | | Peru

The World Organization for Animal Health (WHO) continues to report on Avian Influenza Highly pathogenic (HPAI) in poultry, wild birds, and mammals, mainly in Europe, America, and Asia.

In this context, the National Center for Epidemiology and Prevention and Control (CDC-Peru) of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) will conduct the “Exercise Pre-Detection of Avian Influenza Cases in Peru”, the purpose of which is to assess the multisectoral response before a human avian influenza case occurs ability.

Considering that planning and preparation are critical to mitigating public health risks and damages, this exercise will be conducted with high training standards to enhance multisectoral coordination and linkage.

Regional and local levels such as the National Agricultural Health Service (Senasa), the National Forest and Wildlife Service (Serfor), and the National Nature Reserve Service (Sernanp) will be notified of zoonotic diseases and carry the Surveillance and preventive control actions for subtypes of avian influenza.

The exercise will be held on August 9-11, 2023 with staff from CDC, National Institutes of Health (INS), Senasa, Ministry of Environment (Minam), Serfor, Sernanp, Diresa Callao and Ventanilla Municipality will participate.

In Peru, as of Epidemiological Week 28-2023, 241 animals in backyard and wild birds in 16 provinces and the Constitutional Province of Callao have been confirmed positive for avian influenza A(H5) subtype.

Animal outbreaks have been reported in new areas such as Latino Guinea (La Libertad) and San Juan de Miraflores (Lima) in the past two weeks. To date, no human cases of avian influenza have been reported in the country.

On the other hand, the World Health Organization reported in July that cats in Poland died abnormally due to infection with H5N1 influenza, and 29 cats tested positive for influenza; no symptoms were reported when humans came into contact with these animals.
