Baby sharks, ASMR videos and beluga cats, Kaspersky reveals most clicked content by kids last year

Milan, 1 June 2023. The most clicked content by children between May 2022 and April 2023 has been revealed by a new study by Kaspersky Safe Kids. Miraculous: Tales of Lady Bug and Chat Noir was the favorite cartoon online and ‘Baby Shark’ was the most searched song on YouTube. The beluga cat was the most popular meme among the youth and the ASMR videos proved to be very popular.

Today’s children are exposed to electronic devices from an early age, and start surfing online at a very young age. This way they can explore the world, make new friends, play and learn. Kaspersky examined young people’s online searches to find out what has increased their interest over the past year. This new analysis is based on anonymised data – search queries, most used Android applications and most requested website categories – voluntarily provided by Kaspersky Safe Kids users.

Between May 2022 and April 2023, YouTube (33%), TikTok (18%) and WhatsApp (18%) were the most used apps on Android. Roblox took fourth place (7%). However, on Windows, the most popular were Google Chrome (46%) and Microsoft Edge (13%).

When it comes to YouTube, many kids primarily search for channels and bloggers that provide entertainment content, such as challenge or lifestyle channels (19%). Cartoons, TV shows and anime (17%) took the second place while music artists (15.7%) took the third place. Game bloggers accounted for 15.5% of searches and gaming content for 10%.

As for cartoons (46%), the fifth season of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir was the most searched. Chainsaw Man, Demon Slayer and One Piece were the most watched anime (16%), while the most liked movies were Super Mario Bros. Movie, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Rock Dog 3: Battle the Beat.

‘Baby Shark’ was the most searched song by kids. In terms of musical preferences, Korean pop groups BLACKPINK and BTS, rap genre and Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny were most liked.

Between May 2022 and April 2023, apart from Roblox and Minecraft, the video games that gathered the youngest preferences were Brawl Stars, Fortnite, Genshin Impact and Stumble Guys.

The most popular memes among children in the past year have been ‘Beluga’, ‘Skibidibop’, ‘Gigachd’ and ‘Countryhumans’. In addition, ASMR videos also proved to be very popular, with the most clicked being ‘Asmr Eating’ and ‘Asmr Makeup’.

“Last year was full of events dedicated to children. In addition to the ever-popular big classics, there have also been several “seasonal” shows related to newly released cartoons. These trends are important and interesting to kids, but they also allow parents to discover and take a closer look at current trends to build a more trusting relationship with their kids. For this reason, a reliable parental control solution can be an excellent ally to not only protect children online, but also to showcase their interests,” he added. To ensure a positive online experience for children, Kaspersky advises parents to:

• Be involved in your children’s online activities from an early age, so that it becomes an ingrained habit and therefore guide them in online safety practices.

• Consider downloading a parental control app and discuss it with your children to explain how they work and why you need them.

• Make IT security conversations interesting and enjoyable by tackling the topic through games and other fun formats.

• Spend more time talking to your kids about online safety measures and pay attention to their habits. For example, if you use a smartphone while eating or chatting. If children mimic the behavior of their parents and if they behave differently when the phone is not in use.

• Tell your children not to accept privacy settings on their own and to contact their parents. Even adults should make it a habit to read confidentiality agreements.
