Bad Bunny, Reggaeton and Resistance Event Calendar: Changing Views on Women, Sexuality and Sacrifice

Dr. Susana Vargas Cervantes will host a conversation with Dr. Sonia Lipsett-Rivera on “Bad Bunny, Reggaeton, and Resistance: Changing Perspectives on Women, Sexuality, and Sacrifice.”

Susana Vargas Cervantes is an assistant professor in the Department of Journalism and Communications at Carleton University. She received Fulbright and National Autonomous University of Mexico research fellowships. She received her MA and PhD from McGill University (Art History and Communication Studies). Her research has also been supported by the Social Sciences and Research Council of Canada. Dr. Vargas Cervantes’s published work includes The Little Old Lady Killer: The Sensational Crimes of Mexico’s First Serial Killer (NYU Press, 2019), which was based on 10 years of research and has been the subject of several productions, including a Netflix documentary. Her current project is called “Alarma: 50 Years of Nota Roja in Mexico.” The focus is on the most iconic periodical nota roja of the last half century. This analysis of Alarm explores the complex interweaving of crime photography, violence, sensationalism, and viewers’ demands for the “truth” to be revealed through photographs.

Sonia Lipsett-Rivera is a professor of history at Carleton University. She has published numerous books and articles on Mexican history. In 2020, she was awarded the Maria Elena Martinez Prize for her book The Origins of the Macho: Men and Masculinity in Colonial Mexico. She has also received grants and fellowships in support of her research, including from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. In her latest work, she explores the ways in which Mexican men were stereotyped during the colonial era. Her work challenges notions of masculinity, hypermasculinity, bravado, and violence, and suggests that, in fact, calm and equanimity were the social ideals of Mexico during the colonial period.
