Barbie and Aqua break silence on use of Barbie Girl in film after lawsuit with Mattel

The Aqua hit from the 90s gave Mattel a headache, but ended up being used in a new version of Greta Gerwig’s film.

Danish Europop band. Aqua decided Breaking the silence on the use of their hit Barbie Girl in a Greta Gerwig film. Aqua’s success exploded in 1997 with the release of a song from Aqualand’s debut album. In light of the huge popularity of the song, even before the film’s release, many were convinced (or at least hoped) that the song would be used in Barbie. What, however, did in the movie we don’t hear the original version barbie Girl, but the Barbie World remix with Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice

. However, at first, the possibility of not hearing the Aqua song at all in any version was more than concrete. This is due to the complex disputes between the Danish group and Matteleven went to trial.

In 1997 Mattel feared that the Aqua hit would end up making their iconic doll look sexy.. A lawsuit followed against MCA Records for trademark infringement, which ended with the “cleansing” of Barbie Girl, officially recognized as a parody. Now Aqua, in the face of the singer Lene Nystrom and from Rene Defbroke their silence over the use of the song in the Gerwig movie (our review here) and disputes with giant Mattel.

During an interview with The keeper, Lene Nystrom explained that collaborating on the Barbie Girl remix with Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice was pretty unexpected. This was because it initially looked like the hit would not be used in any form. “We thought it wouldn’t be needed” Nystrom said. “We knew very well that they would want something new and unedited. And then, just two months ago, we were asked to do this collaboration (with Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice). Everything happened very quickly.”. Instead, René Dif interpreted the collaboration with two artists for Barbie World as a real olive branch from Mattel: “It was nice to see Mattel come in and say, ‘Hi, everything’s fine'”.
