Javier Bardem, Elle Fanning and Salma Hayek gave an air of hollywood to the jurisdiction of the 70’s Berlin film Festival, with the presentation of “The System Not Taken”, from britain’s Sally Potter, and the day of today. The director has based his own life and for the creation of the film.
“My brother, unfortunately, has been that although young, it is a form of madness, and I took care of him for two years, until the year of his death,” she says, in the press conference after the session of the media. “But I’ve learned a lot of things in the mind. Not always the disease is one of the people with disabilities. Perhaps, within the tragedy, there is a space for parallel realities, in a journey in time and in space. Much respect to the people in that state, and who is in charge of the people of this state.”
The subject is so delicate that, from the beginning of the project and of execution, Potter, is directed to another of the movie “The Party”. “It’s a long movie, to assimilate and develop,” said the director. “The time has come, when Javier has become in Leo, and Therefore has become His.”
In the plot, which unfolds in a single day, Bardem, is a mexican immigrant that Leo (the lion, which is subjected to a type of neurological disease, possibly dementia. It speaks of an inconsistent, that does not seem to remember that one thing is missing. His daughter, Molly (Elle Fanning), is in charge of taking care of him, take him to the dentist, the doctor, with results that are dramatic and comical at the same time. However, your head is in another part. He is writing a book on ancient Greece, or living with the Water (Salma Hayek) in Mexico.
“The System Not Taken” (which could be translated as “roads not travelled”) is one of those opportunities that life offers and that have been left behind. Time and time again that we ask: “what if…?”. But, in addition, it is a good part of the special relationship between a father and a daughter, and this is the part that receives the good. Bardem and Fanning, that do not resemble physically (the mother of Molly, who is played by Laura Linney), but there is no chemistry between the two.
Fanning, 21, says that she’s nervous, working together with the Spanish actor. “Is that Javier Bardem!”, I said. “I knew that interpretarmos the relationship that we had to meet. Fortunately, in that Sally really likes to do security testing in reception. We talk a lot about life, our memory, of the experience of the nearness of death. In the day of preparation, that he was sick, and he brought it to the Coca-Cola company, and crackers. As if it were my father is the same,” said the actress. “When we started rolling, because we were in the mood,” he added.
Bardem has thanked the director had left him to explore the things that I had to do to be his father. “He was a brave,” said the actor. “I have felt loved by Him. I was crazy for working with Salma, only I was dying of fear to speak in Spanish with mexican accent,” he joked.
Salma Hayek was only at home. “In a unique opportunity to work with my favorite actor in the Spanish-speaking world! But it is curious, because he married my best friend, the Spanish actress Penelope Cruz). When I found out that Javier was talking with his accent, it seemed to me that there was something that was not right with him.”
