‘Big Mouth’ Still the Worst Show on TV – Rolling Stone

The Netflix animated comedy is in the middle of a new season. Big mouthHigh school student Matthew (Andrew Rannells) worries: “I don’t want to overstay my welcome like Office after Steve Carell left.”
It’s a kind of meta-humor that Big mouth loves he is only slightly less fond of jokes about erections, orgasms, menstruation, sex with sofa cushions, inappropriate fantasies and other indignities of early adolescence. It’s easy to blame Matthew for the anxiety. This is the seventh season of the seriesBig mouth and while there’s only one more planned after this, spending seven years depicting life in high school is only a slightly smaller extension of time than M*A*S*H
it took him 11 years to chronicle a war that lasted only two years.
Later in the same episode, when Jessie (Jesse Glaser) says that the show is all about how terrible high school is, Caleb (Joe Wengert) tells her, “Please don’t break the fourth wall. We just renovated it.”
But if this new party
continues to apologize for how long it spent in this era of its characters’ lives, but also looks to the future. Much of this season has spent Nick (co-creator Nick Kroll), Andrew (John Mulaney), Jesse, Missy (Ayo Edebiri) and the rest of the gang preparing for life after Bridgeton Middle. They visit local high schools, meet older kids, and learn how much more intense and scary sex can be at that age. And before the end of the season, everyone went to ninth grade. one should not regret too much how slowly it has moved through time so far. Regardless of the level his characters are at, he remains one of the most reliable, inventive, and, yes, obnoxious laugh machines in all of television.
Season seven continues to offer all of this, even as it changes the world dramatically and adds a host of new characters, such as Danny (Zazie Beetz), the older girl who traps lovelorn Nick in the Friend Zone, or high school power couple Timon ( Chloe Fineman) and Pumbaa (John Daly). Characters hope to reinvent themselves in a new environment, such as Andrew, who calls himself “Drew” in hopes that no one in high school will know that his Bridgeton classmates rightly called him “the rudest person.” But changing your image and your behavior is much harder than changing your nickname, and in one of the funniest episodes of the season, Andrew – actually a group of different Andrews – repeatedly travels through time to find and prevent the incident that forever branded him a pervert.

We see other characters develop in interesting ways. For example, throughout much of the series, Matthew reluctantly tolerated the presence of Caleb, whose autism spectrum disorder can manifest itself in extremely harsh, socially unacceptable behavior. But as they prepare for high school, Matthew realizes that he truly loves and protects Caleb, and that Caleb’s straightforwardness has its benefits in certain situations. It’s nice in the sense that the show manages to be so often, even as Andrew and Matthew Morey’s shared hormonal monster (Kroll again) makes the most disgusting suggestions imaginable.
There are also stories about the dangers of bad relationships – this one is accompanied by a musical number in which Megan Thee Stallion plays Megan, Danny’s hormone monster, asexual Elijah (Brian Tyree Henry) who wonders if he’ll enjoy masturbation, and how Jessie An unpleasant hobby develops. watching her stepmother feed her little sister Jessie. And just in case there was any doubt that the series has run out of ideas, the off-format annual special features a series of stories from around the world so Connie (Maya Rudolph) can prove to Maury that kids in every country are equally obsessed with sex. like Andrew, Missy and the rest.
Trends Deep down, Kroll and company seem to know that it’s okay that they took so long to let their kids graduate from Bridgeton Middle. As Caleb once said, “I think people just want the show they’ve always been tuned in to.” Luckily, that’s what audiences will continue to see.Season seven
