Binance announced that it is raising funds in cryptocurrencies to help the population of Haiti after the country was hit by a new earthquake.
The exchange operates through Binance Charity, an arm in charge of the company’s social responsibility projects, in association with the NGO “Hope for Haiti”. The expectation is raising around $ 100,000 worth of cryptocurrencies with the support of the crypto community.
A part of the money will be used to rescue at least 300 people who are still missing in the southern region of the country, which was hit by a new earthquake on August 14.
The funds raised will also be used to help buy, import and distribute at least $ 60 million worth of medicines, PPE, supplies and medical equipment to more than 38 partners.
Other planned uses include financing 50,000 medical consultations for those affected by the natural disaster, 15,000 domestic water filter systems, debris removal and rehabilitation of urban spaces such as schools and hospitals, as well as financial education and cryptocurrency classes for the population. .
The earthquake is the latest disaster to hit Haiti
Up to now, Binance has already donated the equivalent of $ 50,000 worth of BTC and plans to increase the rest of the goal in the next four weeks.
Binance Charity Director Helen Hai emphasizes the importance of crypto community support to help humanitarian crises:
“The news of further devastation hitting Haiti is heartbreaking. Some of the hardest hit areas are rural, so we are proud to be able to work with Hope for Haiti, who has experience in the region for over 30 years, to help deliver aid quickly. The crypto community has shown tremendous compassion after the tragedies of the last 18 months and we kindly ask for help once again, this time from the Haitian community, where many have lost everything. “
Binance emphasizes that the earthquake that struck Haiti occurred amid other unrest affecting the Central American country. The natural catastrophe took place amid political unrest and during the COVID-19 pandemic, making things difficult for relief teams.
Skyler Badenoch, CEO of Hope for Haiti, noted:
“The incredible generosity of Binance Charity after the devastating earthquake will directly enable our team to provide essential relief, support and ongoing assistance to Haitian families in the great south of Haiti.”
Donations can be made online and, depending on the exchange, the total amount raised will be used to finance relief operations in Haiti.
