Bird flu detected in sea lions, Punta Bermeja closed – ADN

(ADN) – The Viedma government has reported on the decision of the Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Rionegro to temporarily close the Interpretive Center of the Punta Bermeja Nature Reserve.

The decision was taken after a case of bird flu was confirmed in a sample of sea lions (Otaria flavescens) and certified by SENASA (National Food Hygiene and Quality Service).

The measure is aimed at protecting the health of marine animals and tourists who frequent the coastal area.
Avian influenza is considered a potentially zoonotic disease that may pose a risk to human health.

The virus can be found in the faeces and secretions of seabirds and mammals, meaning that direct contact with these animals or indirect contact with their bodily fluids could pose a risk to people who pass by them.

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Rionegro therefore notified the closure of access to the Punta Bermeja Nature Reserve until further notice.

This action is part of the ongoing monitoring mission to implement precautionary measures and ensure the success of this critical area of biodiversity conservation.
