Black dress: dress cult timeless, needs no introduction and continues to set trends
A black dress is not just a dress, it is a dress with a capital letter that we will never get tired of. Regardless of the cut and model, a black dress can give address unique for any look: you can wear a very sophisticated long dress for a formal and elegant gala dinner or a mini for a walk around the city, you will always make a great impression.
Like the gorgeous Morgan Stewart, who wears a Prada mini balloon dress with cutouts and the iconic triangle, the brand’s iconic symbol; as Morgan shows, the black dress is so beautifully dressed that it requires minimal effort even in terms of makeup and hair. Indeed, in these cases, it is the simplicity of makeup and hairstyles that makes the image sophisticated and relevant.
But we have to take a step back because there are black dresses that have made fashion history and we can’t help but dedicate a few words to them.
Elegant black dress that made history: from Audrey Hepburn to Diana’s revenge dress
It was the style icons of the past that made the black dress the iconic and most influential piece of clothing in history; Of course, we have to thank Audrey Hepburn, who, with her elegance and poise, won the hearts of women of the 60s with the iconic Givenchy black cocktail dress, worn in the film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s“.
In the future, Diana’s revenge dress will become an era. In 1994, he just got out of the car on occasion garden parties (at London’s Serpentine Gallery), wows everyone by breaking strict royal protocol and wearing a designer black suit. Christina Stambolyan: Black side slit, wide neckline with open arms and legs.
Rock, sexy and transgressive black dress
But the black dress is not only a symbol of the elegance and sophistication of the past, because it has always been loved (in all its variants) by rock icons, actresses and supermodels from all over the world. Like the very young Madonna, who in 1998 wore a black mini dress with fishnet stockings, a denim jacket and provocative red lipstick; last but not least, a dress with an open back from the very sensual actress Drew Barrymore.
Also Kate Moss in 1995 at the exclusive New York premiere of “Book by Kate Moss“, wearing a little black dress with cutouts and a slit at the back.
Black dress in 2023
Back to us, what black clothes to wear these days? In this collection, inspired by 7 outfits worn by modern fashionistas and it-girls, we will pick up the perfect trendy black dresses for the summer season and (why not) leave it in your wardrobe even in the cold season!
#1 Short black dress, fresh and sophisticated like Lily-Rose Depp.
The short black dress with a slightly flared skirt worn by Lily-Rose Depp is a hymn to simplicity that does not require the addition of accessories; perfect for wearing with matching flat sandals like the ballerina-inspired model from Chanel sandals with a heel.
The short black Coperni dress has the brand’s classic, distinctive cut, simple and elegant, with the addition of a fun, high-gloss black spring-inspired detail all around the bust and skirt hem; the ribbed MSGM model, always very similar to the one worn by Lily-Rose, has a striking U-neckline and an even wider skirt, which, thanks to the seam at the ends, gives the dress movement and lightness.
Fitted but not enveloping, the Courrèges sleeveless mini dress has a minimalist and highly practical design, thanks to its adjustable straps and lightweight, comfortable material.
#2 Sporty little black dress like Emily Ratajkowski
Looking for comfort with a little black jersey dress (a little sports) Emily Ratajkowski, you are never wrong. With the dress’s simple lines, you can indulge yourself by pairing it with comfortable low top sneakers in your preferred color (Superga or Vans are Emily’s favorites). The same goes for the bag!
If you want to take inspiration from Emily and imitate her look, the Mango model is almost identical in style, cut and material; wide shoulder straps, a round neckline and a high collar made of thin jersey are perfect for summer. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for something a little more sophisticated, but always casual, you can opt for the H&M stretch sheath dress, with a rectangular and pronounced neckline both at the front and at the back, and with the addition of a little drape at the side to create movement.
#3 Black varsity dress like Kaia and Elodie.
The dress (which we’ll be hearing a lot about in the coming months) worn by Kaia Gerber and Elodie is part of the Valentino Fall Winter 23/24 collection called “Valentino black tie”; in complete student style, thanks to the design of the top, reminiscent of the collar of a classic white shirt with a tie knot!
Ahead of the new release from Valentino, we have chosen two equally chic and full college style pieces.
Miu Miu’s first sleeveless short dress in flowy and soft fai cady, with a contrasting white collar with scalloped edges, a bow and pearl buttons. The second 3/4 sleeve satin dress is designed by REDValentino, with white contrast repeated on each side, from the skirt to the sleeves and shirt collar.
#4 Long, practical and floating black dress.
The perfect comfy and breezy summer dress to wear with elegant leather flat sandals, a pair of extravagant fashionable Suicoke boots or, why not, with the Birkenstocks of your favorite style.
Very similar to the model pictured above, the wide V-neck black Wwan dress has a soft yet flattering fit thanks to a neckline that remains narrow at the top; it is also equipped with practical adjustable shoulder straps that fasten at the back with an open back detail. If you’re looking for a similar but more sophisticated design, you can opt for the Dorotee Schumacher long pleated dress, the only difference being the square neckline with special pleated details.
We also picked up two models with a fitted bodice + fluffy skirt. The first from Matteau, made of soft organic cotton and with beautiful ruffles on the skirt (and among the trends of summer 2023); Pockets have also been added to make it even more practical. Featuring a mini-bodice and a cut-out back, the COS model also has hidden pockets on both sides.
#5 Long, sexy and bright black dress
Natural wavy hair, quite a lot express makeup, a generous heel and that’s it: you don’t need anything else to complete your look with a beautiful long satin black dress. For example, Camila Cabello, who wears The Attico cut-out dress (which you will find among the selected products below).
Here it is, the black suit.Melva– signed The Attico, which we talked about, with a fitted waist and a silhouette with a long flared skirt; Thin asymmetrical straps, along with a pronounced neckline, give a classy and elegant dress a dramatic look.
We also opted for the Wangscanis, a bold and very sensual option thanks to its lustrous satin and special neckline, but in black and sheer lace; cross X on the back, which highlights the back and shoulders to the waist, makes everything even more sexy. Instead, we love the Aceno slip dress for its flowing soft silk silhouette and minimalist cut, making it perfect for multiple wears both day and night.
#6 Long dress and slim fitsquare cut
The square neckline fitted long dress is a classic that has become fashionable in recent years thanks to soft stretchy fabrics that flatter the figure.
The Abingoo model has a very minimalistic cut, gentle and ideal for summer; its stretchy and ultra-light fabric hugs the body to accentuate every curve in just the right place, while the wide neckline and spaghetti straps make it perfect for adding bold accessories to break up the simplicity of the dress, like colorful beaded necklaces. Very similar, but in a long stretch case, we have a dress.”Rileyfrom Solace London with adjustable shoulder straps and a thin back vent.
#7 Black dress with contrast detail
The cut is very similar to the previous category, but with the addition of contrasting white details; like Sofia Richie, who wears a formfitting Maje dress with white embroidery that follows the neckline and sleeves.
Definitely one of my favourites, the elegant black Paris Georgia dress has a simple but well thought out cut, has a stretchy cut that flatters the figure; The contrasting detail in white appears not only on the sweetheart neckline, but also on the seams on the sides of the dress and on the back neckline, as well as on the slit back. We also chose a black dress from Zara, a one-shoulder dress with a simple cut, but complemented by two symmetrical and shiny side cutouts with a contrasting detail of sparkling rhinestones; as in the previous model, there is an elegant slit on the back.
