Breanna Stewart makes WNBA history: She sets new single-season scoring record

New York Liberty leader Breanna Stewart scored 40 points in Tuesday’s win over the Dallas Wings (94-93) And broke the WNBA single-season scoring record with 885 points, surpassing the 860-point record held by Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury.

Stewart, 29, had a double-double of 40 points and 10 rebounds against the Wings, his fourth 40-point game this year.

The native New Yorker is coming off a phenomenal season, averaging 23.3 points per game as the Liberty dominates the Eastern Conference with a 31-7 record.

STwart surpassed Taurasi’s record set in 2006, although the legendary Mercury player did so in a 34-game seasonand the New Yorker did so in Game 38 of 40 scheduled this season.

The Libero forward scored at least 40 points in his fourth game of the year, an all-time record.

He scored 45 points on the Fever in May, 43 on the Mercury in July, 42 on the Fever in August and signed 40 players against the Wings on Tuesday.

Stewart is the favorite to win the WNBA MVP, and his regular season ends Sunday.
