Ben Affleck, connected from Los Angeles, spoke during the episode of Che tempo che fa broadcast on 26 March. The actor opened up about his new film Air, he clarified he doesn’t want to use Michael Jordan’s name for promotion, and he had romantic words for his wife Jennifer Lopez.
Ben Affleck intervened during the episode of What’s the weather like, broadcast on 26 March. The actor, connected from Los Angeles, spoke about the film Air – The story of the great leap, which he wrote, directed and starred in, which will hit Italian theaters on April 6. Through the story that led to the birth of the famous Air Jordan shoes, Affleck intends to delve into the deepest mechanisms and the dynamics of the people involved. Affleck explained:
The product was special because they represented that athlete and thus instilled feelings in the audience. Something that is taken for granted today, but in those years it was a new and radical notion. So much was believed in this basketball player, that they invested a fortune in him.
Ben Affleck took the opportunity of this interview to clarify that the film does not simply intend to tell the story of how Air Jordan shoes were born, but the aim is to stage everything that revolves around this world:
It’s not the story of a shoe. It might seem like simply capitalist propaganda, to say how wonderful this company was, but our approach is more refined, it aims to make people understand the relationship between a company and the United States of America market. It shows how companies exploit the figures of athletes. We have tried to explore everything at 360 degrees, also to give hope and optimism in what is in this situation. The protagonist is not who you think he is. The story revolves around Michael Jordan’s mother.
Ben Affleck has remarked the esteem he feels for Michael Jordan since he was a child: “I’ve always recognized that he is above everything. As a child I thought: ‘If he does these things, I too will be able to do something beautiful, great in life’. Did I do Batman? What Batman did compared to Jordan they are peanuts”. When Fabio Fazio asked him if Michael Jordan had seen the film, the actor firmly clarified that he did not want to use Jordan’s name to promote this project:
Maria De Filippi and Maurizio Costanzo: the couple who made TV history
Have you seen the movie? I have to be a little careful. I don’t want to quote Michael to promote this movie. This film is not the story of Michael Jordan, it is not about his life, it is the story of others who were around him, who interacted with him. Using it to advertise the film, no. Of course we talked to him, we asked him if he would like him. He was the one who asked for Viola Davis to play her mother.
And on his friend Matt Damon, who plays Sonny Vaccaro in the film, he explained: “We made him fat, we also worked on the shots so that the shots could puff his face up a bit, so that he looks a little different from the Matt Damon that everyone knows. So, it’s easier to identify with him.”
Finally, Fabio Fazio asked Ben Affleck if it is true that Jennifer Lopez helped him write the film. The actor confirmed:
She helps me in everything I do. It’s brilliant. A fantastic woman. My philosophy is that you always have to listen to your wife and then, when you make a film, you have to confront each other. My wife always has better ideas than mine. My wife and I have been to Italy many times, it is an exquisite, magnificent country, with the best food in the world, the climate is magnificent. In Los Angeles we are trying to build a house similar to the ones you have in Italy.
