CDMX athlete dies at 2023 Xel-Há triathlon

The 49-year-old player fainted during the game and was taken to the hospital

On the afternoon of Saturday, November 18, Grupo Xcaret confirmed the death of a 49-year-old athlete who collapsed during the Xel-Há triathlon.

Just hours earlier, organizers of this year’s race issued a statement explaining that the man had received medical attention but died in hospital due to “cardiopulmonary arrest.”

“It is with deep sadness that we report the tragic passing of a 49-year-old Mexico City resident athlete on Saturday morning, November 18, while competing in the Xel-Há Triathlon.

“During the competition we were informed that one of the participating athletes had fainted and he was immediately treated by emergency personnel who were present and transferred to a private hospital in Playa del Carmen, where he had vital signs on arrival.

Grupo Xcaret explained: “We have confirmed that the participant tragically lost his life after a cardiopulmonary arrest. We deeply regret this and we mourn with his family and friends.”

The identities of the participants are currently unknown.

Who won the Xel-Há Triathlon?

The men’s Olympic triathlon, which includes swimming (1,500 meters), cycling (40 kilometers) and running (20 kilometers), kicks off at 6:34 a.m. this Saturday in Riviera Maya. Crisanto Grajales from Veracruz won the race with a time of 1:51:21, almost reaching the finish line and taking a few seconds to celebrate with the crowd.

Athlete Daniela Baca took the podium in the women’s elite category.
