On 19 May, the new EP by Ticino artist Julie Meletta was released, titled «Chick!». With her pop style, both modern and vintage, with yeh-yeah influences from the 70s, she takes us into a colorful world of her own. Blue News talked to him about this.

Born and raised in Ticino, Julie Meleta It is the product of a beautiful mix of cultural colours. A Chinese grandfather, a French mother and a Swiss-Italian father together give him broad musical horizons.

The singer-songwriter has drawn on all of his influences to create his own musical bubble, which can be seen on his EP «CHIC!» can be found in Five light and danceable tunes with strong and deep words from a woman studying literature and philosophy at university. We had a conversation with him.

When we listen to your music, it sounds light and light, but if we pay attention to the lyrics, we find that they are much deeper than they seem. Do you like to play with this paradox?

Contrast is important to me. If I talk about something that scares me, I don’t put scary music on it because I don’t want it to be too overwhelming. I want to bring a different perspective of looking at things. Yes, there are difficult situations. For example, the song «Chick!» It talks about insomnia, but one shouldn’t take itself too seriously.

There must always be some light somewhere. Writing strong stuff to light music also gives me hope for the future. In fact, it’s a philosophy of life: recognizing that there are difficulties, but knowing that there is always a solution, even if you don’t see it right away.

What message do you want to convey to your audience?

First of all I want to empathize with people. Every song is like a diary entry for me. Every time I talk about situations that hinder me. There is nothing extraordinary in what I am experiencing, it is something everyone goes through. And if someone says to me, “When I hear your song, I know what you mean, because I’ve been there and it gives me hope,” then I’ve achieved my goal. Add.

Who is your audience?

I have just started doing live concerts. At this point, it’s mainly people who listen to my music on the radio. And people also write to me on social networks. Music is a bond, a means of communication and also a way of telling stories. It’s a way of not feeling alone.

You received a literary prize during your studies in Literature and Philosophy at the University of Freiburg. But a song is a very dense text. Isn’t it a little frustrating to write them off because they are so short?

No, on the contrary! As a child I wanted to be a writer. I love to write, but when I start, I get lost. I have many stories, many characters. A song, on the other hand, is more structured: you know where you start, you know where you end. Since my mind is always in turmoil, having structure is reassuring to me. A song brings order in chaos I hear (laughs).

Who are the artists who inspire you the most?

Oh my god, I have to open a book (laughs)! Being half French – because my mother is from Paris – I listened to a lot of French chansons, especially those from the 70s yeh yeh period. As a child, I heard Serge Gainsbourg, France Gall, brigitte bardot, francois hardyetc…

My father, on the other hand, was more into The Beatles. I discovered him especially as a teenager: I fell in love with every stage of his career. But I’m also interested in today’s music, like Taylor Swift, Mark ronson And miley Cyrus,

Whether modern or classic, you are a bit of a UFO in today’s music landscape. is this your intention?

I really wanted to bring my influences into my music, it’s part of who I am. Even though I grew up in Ticino, French chanson makes me feel at home. Some sounds are mine because I have absorbed them. And for me music has to be honest.

You are at the beginning of your career, what are your dreams?

Above all, I would like to be able to take my music to the whole of Switzerland. We are a small country, but with many different cultures. I already have dates planned on the French and Italian side and in the future I want to focus on German-speaking Switzerland to discover this area that I haven’t explored yet. And then the French market is another target that I want to hit. But I have yet to figure out how it works.
