Chiclayo: Minsa hospital has insufficient beds, patients use dirty buckets | Edition

Inpatients in the men’s ward of the Mercedes Teaching Hospital in Chiclayoras reported that they were provided with unhealthy buckets of water, such as pans, to satisfy their physiological needs. The hospital’s director, Juan Oriundo Verástegui, said logistical problems were caused by a stagnation in technical documentation during previous administrations.

Miki Alvarez, representative of the Lambayeque Defense Front, noted that members of the Integrated Health System (SIS) have been denouncing a series of irregularities in health institutions; well, they are not only forced to endure logistical shortages; There is a shortage of medicines in some pharmacies. “The way the patients were cared for was incredible. “They had to urinate and even vomit into a bucket of paint. If they don’t even have basic tools like a potty, where are we? ” he emphasized.

He added that SIS has the budget to equip the above-mentioned hospitals with instruments; however, he made it clear that they would not provide them. “Why is this issue not being effectively addressed? What do they need? It’s unacceptable that this should happen when there is money to address this issue,” he said.

Additionally, he reported that drugs to treat pneumonia, such as meropenem, were not available at the hospital; for low-resource patients, access was nearly impossible due to high costs. “That ampoule (meropenem), doctors prescribe it for up to 10 days of treatment. Each one costs about 15 soles and must be applied 3 times a day. In other words, if the user does not have the money to buy it, they will Die,” he said.

In light of the above, Alvarez said he has filed a complaint with the National Health Supervision Agency (Susalud) so that they can follow up on the case. However, he urged the Office of the Ombudsman to step in and demand that the issue be addressed immediately.

For his part, Juan Oriundo, director of Las Mercedes, mentioned that during the course of his administration he came across a series of pending documents; this would have led to the lack of clothing and thus the determination of liability.

He assured that the main problems at the hospital have been resolved but it will take time to resolve the remaining issues. “I hope the people understand that in the three months since he started taking office, it will not be possible to immediately solve the problems that have been delayed for many years. Everything will take time, but it will always be solved.” He said.

He said requirements from different areas of the hospital are being met to maintain the integrity of patients and prevent them from continuing to be affected.
