The pharmacological authorities of Chile, one of the countries with the highest vaccination rate against COVID-19 in the world, approved this Thursday Expand the emergency use of Chinese CoronaVac Serum in children aged 3-6 years.

The country where more than 90% of the population has already completed their immunization schedule, already administered this vaccine from the Sinovac laboratory, to minors from 6 years of age since last September.

The Institute of Public Health (ISP) approved this Thursday to extend its use to children from the age of 3, thus converting Chile is the first country in South America to give the green light to inoculation for this age group.

According to the institution, preliminary conclusions of the clinical study, carried out by the Millennium Institute of the Catholic University of Chile, showed “that children present higher production of antibodies than adults and fewer adverse reactions ”.

“For children under 3 we have to have more evidence. We will see how vaccination advances in this group and we will see if we expand the range, “added the Undersecretary of Health, Paula Daza.

The doctor Heriberto Garcia, director of the Institute of Public Health, (ISP), explained that the decision was adopted after analyzing in detail a Chinese report on the application of 100 million doses in children from 3 to 17 years old.

“We already have enough background to give approval for children as young as 3 years for (the use of) the Coronavac vaccine” from Sinovac, Garcia said.

He added that “the production of antibodies in children is better … which could show -and it is part of what needs to be further investigated- thate probably in vaccinated children the contagion would decrease to zero ”.

He specified that the report by the Chinese pharmaceutical company indicates that after inoculation only 3,890 adverse reactions were reported, especially among children between 12 and 17 years old, and that in the group of 3 to 5 years “no serious adverse reaction appeared”. The most common reaction was a swelling in the arm, very normal in the application of any vaccine, he added.

The South American country is among the five countries in the world with the highest percentage of vaccinated population and it is the one that has administered the most booster doses, according to the Oxford University registry.

The pandemic, which had its most serious peak between last March and June and forced to confine 90% of the population again, It has been under control for more than three months, although with slight ups and downs.

In the last 24 hours, 2,641 new cases and 43 deaths were added, and a positivity rate -number of positive tests over the total carried out- of 2.9% was registered nationwide.

The country, which has already reached 1.75 million infections and 38,218 deaths, enjoys few restrictions compared to the rest of the health crisis, without curfew or quarantines and with all shops, bars, restaurants open.

Vaccinated foreigners can enter the country since last October through four airports and from December they will also be able to do it through several land crossings.
