Chinese TV broadcast videos of Peng Shuai, but the WTA president considers them insufficient

The Chinese tennis player Peng shuai, whose whereabouts aroused great international concern in recent days, appeared in a new video posted on Twitter by Chinese journalists while attending a sporting event.

Journalists related to the Chinese Government today they retweeted several videos of an event organized by China Open in which Peng can be seen signing balls and posing for the cameras.

This publication follows another video released last night in which the tennis player is seen dining at a restaurant in Beijing.

WTA President Steve Simon called Peng’s video at the restaurant a “positive sign” on Saturday, but considered it “insufficient” because it is not clear if the Chinese tennis player is at liberty or if she can make decisions for herself.

“Although it is positive to see her, it is not clear if she is free and can make decisions for herself, without being forced or external interference. These videos are insufficient, ”Simon pointed out.

“As I made clear from the beginning, I am very concerned for Shuai Peng’s health and safety and that his allegations of sexual abuse have been censored and hidden under the rug,” he added.

Peng, former world number one in doubles, “disappeared” since last November 2 denounced sexual abuse by former Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli.

Only media related to the Chinese government distributed images of Peng in recent days, while the WTA tried to contact her without success.

China, challenged by the Peng Shuai case

Peng’s disappearance and the government’s silence in response to requests for information led to demands for a boycott of the Winter Olympics to be held in February in Beijing.

It is an event in which the Communist Party would seek prestige.

The professional women’s tennis tour threatened to withdraw tournaments from China Unless the safety of Peng, who rose to the top of the world ranking in doubles, is guaranteed.

Discussions about Peng were erased on China’s websites and a government spokesman on Friday denied knowing about the widespread outrage the case is sparking.
