Clickbait, Sturgill Simpson and Addison Rae among the premieres and releases of the week

A list of what is coming this week to streaming services, music platforms, film and television.

Streaming options are somewhat scarce as August draws to a close, but there are some new offerings. For one thing, TikTok star Addison Rae (with over 4.7 million YouTube followers) makes her acting debut in a remake of the 1999 teen comedy starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook “She’s All That. ”(“ She is like that ”), which in turn was vaguely inspired by“ Pygmalion ”(“ Pygmalion ”). But Rae doesn’t play an updated Laney Boggs; is the character of Prinze Jr. This version, titled “He’s All That” (“He is like that”), has a gender change. The film premieres this Friday on Netflix.

For something a little more adult, Hulu premieres on Friday the comedy “Vacation Friends” (“Friends passengers”), in which chaotic partiers played by John Cena and Meredith Hanger decide to ruin the wedding of a couple (Lil Rel Howery and Yvonne Orji) whom they met on vacation in Mexico.

And for something more serious, the underrated Cold War thriller “The Courier” (“Ironbark”) hits Amazon Prime Video on Friday. The film, based on a true story about a Soviet whistleblower (played by Merab Ninidze) and a British businessman (Benedict Cumberbatch) recruited by intelligence agencies to pass information back and forth, was dropped earlier this year in the run up to the Oscar. The filmmakers took liberties with the plot, which doesn’t even match the history books, but it’s still an exciting film for anyone who misses classic adult spy thrillers.

Sturgill Simpson knows how to make a concept album. In his most recent, “The Ballad of Dood & Juanita”, he shows once again that he is a prodigious chameleon. It couldn’t be more different from his latest album with original material: the fuzz rock soundtrack for the 2019 anime “Sound & Fury”. In between, he recorded a couple of bluegrass records with his own songs. “Dood & Juanita” has more in common with the two most recent albums, both released last year, and even employs the same band. Willie Nelson participates as a guest in the song “Juanita”. In his review, AP’s Scott Bauer said the album almost feels like a “radio series from the 1940s.”

Here comes another Kanye West musical session. This time around, the 22-time Grammy Award winner is expected to present his 10th studio album, “Donda,” on Thursday at Soldier Field in Chicago. It will be the third time that West has held a listening session for his long-awaited album, which is named after his mother, Donda West, who died in 2007 at the age of 58. The first two were held in front of a sold-out crowd at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Among the attendees were Rick Ross, Khloe Kardashian and West’s ex-wife, Kim Kardashian West, along with their children.

Are you looking for something that will wake you up this end of summer (boreal)? “American Horror Story: Double Feature” can get the job done. The two-part series begins in a seaside town where a creatively blocked writer father, pregnant mother, and daughter look forward to a quiet winter, but are sure to be disappointed. The second part moves to the desert, specifically to the Valley of Death. The FX series, which debuts Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET (and Thursday on Hulu), features Sarah Paulson, Frances Conroy and Macaulay Culkin as part of the cast.

Do you want more anguish? Try the Netflix thriller “Clickbait,” in which a seemingly ideal family man disappears and then resurfaces, but not in a good way. An injured Nick (Adrian Grenier) appears online holding a sign that reads: “Abuse of women. With 5 million views, I die ”. In a rescue effort, his sister (Zoe Kazan) and his wife (Betty Gabriel) discover what they didn’t know about Nick: the drama promises to explore the gap between “our virtual and real-life personalities.” The eight-episode series premieres Wednesday.
