Cofepris warns people not to eat ‘popcorn’

The Federal Council for Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) has issued a warning about the consumption of “poppers” products, which are used for recreational purposes and contain highly toxic, volatile and flammable chemicals and can be addictive. .

These products, which often come in small liquid bottles for inhalation, are popular among teenagers. Their reported uses include use as psychoactive substances and sexual stimulants, as they produce euphoric and disinhibited states. However, the release of this inhibition may lead to unsafe sexual practices and increased risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

One of the major dangers associated with consuming “poppers” is the tolerance that users develop due to the short duration of their effects. This results in an increased dose being consumed, which increases the risk of overdose poisoning and the possibility of side effects such as dizziness, vomiting, a drop in blood pressure, or tachycardia.

In addition to the adverse effects mentioned, popcorn consumption can have serious health consequences, such as irritation of the respiratory tract, leading to dyspnea, chronic cough, bronchitis, and lipoid pneumonia. It has been observed that these products may cause eye injuries, visual disturbances, and even vision loss in some cases.

Long-term abuse of these substances can affect peripheral nerves, causing muscle weakness, numbness, and difficulty with movement coordination. Additionally, they can negatively impact the cardiovascular system, lowering blood pressure, causing tachycardia, arrhythmias, ventricular fibrillation, and even increasing the risk of heart attack.

Combining “poppers” with other stimulants or drugs may put additional stress on the cardiovascular system, and the dangers increase the higher the dose and frequency of use of these substances.

The compounds in these products, such as amyl nitrite, isobutyl nitrite, isopropyl nitrite or butyl nitrite, are known for their toxicity, irritation, high volatility and flammability.

Due to the health risks associated with consuming poppers, Cofepris strongly advises the general population not to obtain or use these substances and to avoid mixing them with other legal or illegal substances. Citizens are urged to report the marketing of these products online at gob.mx/cofepris or by calling 800 033 5050.
