Colin Cowherd compares Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs to Tom Brady’s Patriots

The Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes suffered their second loss of the season on Sunday as they fell to the division rival Denver Broncos.

They were upset by the home team 24-9 and were in trouble in this loss. Mahomes completed 24 of 38 passes for 241 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions. He came down with the flu over the weekend and competed.

The Chiefs’ leading receiver was once again tight end Travis Kelce, who caught six passes for 58 yards.

After the loss, sportscaster Colin Cowherd compared Mahomes’ current situation to the Tom Brady years. I compared these two because they don’t have any good receivers and rely on their tight ends for offensive success. He did say that Brady, unlike Mahomes, still has a solid slot receiver:

“It’s all because Patrick Mahomes is sick. If you want to use that as an excuse, their offense isn’t very good. Mahomes’ season is starting to look like some of Brady’s years in New England, where He’s got a great tight end there, like Gronk, and then cross your fingers.

“The difference is Brady will have a smart slot player, Wes Welker or Julian Edelman, veteran receivers who know how to beat zone defenses. That’s This Kansas City Chiefs team is a bunch of kids who can’t catch the ball and drop a lot of passes. Brady was visibly frustrated. Mahomes was really frustrated yesterday, which is rare.”

The Chiefs’ leading receiver was Rashee Rice, who caught four passes for 56 yards. No other Chiefs receiver had more than two catches in the loss. Through eight games played this season, Rice is the leading receiver in catches (30), yards (361) and touchdowns (3). No other Chiefs receiver has 20 catches, 300 yards or two receiving touchdowns this season.

Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos was one of the league’s biggest upsets this season. This was also the first loss to the Broncos in Patrick Mahomes’ career. The last time Denver defeated KC was in 2015.

After losing this game, the Chiefs currently have a record of 6 wins and 2 losses. Their other loss came in the season opener against the Detroit Lions without Travis Kelce and Chris Jones.

The Chiefs hold the best record in the division heading into Week 8 and currently sit at 6-2, tied for the best record in the AFC. They are tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins.
