WEDNESDAY, Oct. 25, 2023 (HealthDay News) — The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned Monday that too many electric scooters pose a fire hazard and that people should stop using them.

The Toos Elite 60-volt electric scooter, also sold under the Zooz name, is sold at Toos Urban Ride stores in New York and online on the Toos website.

Local fire officials determined that a recent apartment fire that killed two people was caused by a lithium-ion battery in a Toos Elite 60-volt scooter, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a news release. One of the victims of the April 10 fire in New York City was a 7-year-old, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said. The scooter that caused the fire was being charged using a 48-volt charger also sold by Toos.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said the scooter has not yet been certified to UL safety standards by an accredited laboratory. UL Solutions issued an advisory regarding these 48-volt chargers because they are marked with unauthorized UL certification. Consumers should stop using scooters regardless of the charger used.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Toos Urban Ride declined to recall the scooters. The company said it disagreed with the commission’s warning and noted that the wrong voltage charger was used to charge the scooters, namely 48 volts instead of 60 volts. Toos claims that CPSC technicians evaluated the Toos 60-volt scooter and “did not find any significant defects in the example sample.”

The company also said it offered to perform a free safety inspection on the scooter to check battery voltage, inspect the scooter’s wiring, check for physical damage and water damage, and make any necessary repairs, but the CPSC rejected the offer. proposal. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission tells people to use only the charger that comes with the product and to always be present while the product is charging.
