CROWDED ROOM S1, E10
JULY 28, 2023
Danny’s life hangs in the balance.
‘Crowded Room’ Creator Wants Amanda Seyfried, Christopher Abbott Spin-off
Crowded Room creator and showrunner Akiva Goldsman talks about a potential spin-off he’d love to see starring Amanda Seyfried and Christopher Abbott.
The actors play therapist Ria Goodwin and lawyer Stan Kamisa, respectively, on the Apple TV+ series. Although the two characters initially clash, they team up in an unlikely fight to secure an acquittal for their client Danny Sullivan (Tom Holland), a teenager with dissociative identity disorder (DID) who is on trial for the attempted murder of Marlin’s (Will Chase) stepfather.
After Danny’s mother Candy (Emmy Rossum) falsely testifies that her son was not sexually abused by Marlin and denies Danny’s subsequent suicide attempt, in the series finale, Rya and Stan seek a new defense strategy that proves Danny’s innocence. As they have lunch together, Ria realizes their only option is to put Danny in the dock and have him face his childhood trauma.
This is easier said than done, as Danny Jack’s (Jason Isaacs) overbearing alter ego thinks denunciation is the safer option. Through a series of photos and probing questions, Stan helps Danny realize that his twin brother Adam, whom Danny thought was the one Marlin attacked, was actually an alter ego in his system all along. He is later found not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to a psychiatric hospital.
In an interview before the start of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Goldsman told EW that he was immediately fascinated by Abbott’s performance on the show.
“I also had this reaction to the fact that Chris Abbott was late for the series”He says. “You’re like, ‘Well, now I just want to watch a show about him and Amanda solving low-key murder mysteries in New York.’
A potential spin-off following the couple could be a hit. After all, the two are perfect for each other – Rya is gorgeous and disarming, while Stan is far more bitchy and direct – and their opposing points of view have already proven to be decisive in resolving complex legal issues. Also, since Raya is now a full-time therapist, it’s likely that she could take a leave of absence to help with one or two cases.
Our only request? For agent Matty Dunn (played by Thomas Sadoski, Seyfried’s real-life husband) to return, mostly to see if his crush on Riya turns into more than just a pizza date.
It can also be a great way to dive into the rich stories of Stan and Rya. Both grapple with guilt and shame throughout “A Crowded Room”: As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Riya finds it hard to juggle career and motherhood. Meanwhile, Stan, a veteran suffering from PTSD, cannot forgive himself for leading a mission that claimed countless lives during the war.
“Stan brings with him his guilt and his feelings of guilt that are so important to the whole play”notes Goldsman. “I think ultimately it’s about what we blame ourselves for and how important it is to forgive ourselves – and then forgive others – because the guilt that we carry with us, this kind of shame that we carry with us that we see in the mirror is so debilitating”.
The showrunner notes that these complex feelings “often they are in no way based on one version of the truth” and they instead “something we inherited” in our life.
“This is what someone put on us, what we welcomed and what we now call our own. If we can get rid of it, great, great.”Goldsman says. “And that’s pretty much what this series is trying to show in different ways, with different characters suffering from their own shame.”
