The flow of information continues Dunes 2 thanks to a new issue of Empire Magazine, despite the fact that the movie has unfortunately been pushed back to March 2024 due to the double strike in Hollywood.
After the double cover and unedited image of Timothée Chalamet, it was the turn of advertising in a new image. Austin Butler, who in the film plays Feida-Rauta, a ferocious and unpredictable assassin played by Sting in the David Lynch film. Here’s how director Denis Villeneuve describes it:
Austin gave the character a cross between a psychopathic killer, an Olympic swordsman and a snake… and Mick Jagger. He has incredible sex appeal, he has charisma and madness. It really came out.
Villeneuve also talks about another character in the painting, Lady Fenring, a Bene Gesserit played by Lea Seydoux, who plays a very small role in Herbert’s novel but will be very present in the film:
I don’t want to talk too much about Lady Fenring. It’s part of the Bene Gesserit network, but I want it to be shrouded in mystery.
My version of Dune is different because the Bene Gesserit attracted me the most about the novel. My adaptation leans more towards their influence: they are the puppeteers of the universe.
Speaking of adaptation, Villeneuve explains that Dunes 2 will complete the film adaptation of the first book “Dune”, written by Herbert. But the story does not end there, and the director expressed his desire to continue his work by filming a trilogy, which he once again stated to Empire:
If I could make a trilogy, it would be a dream come true. I would like to adapt Messiah Dune, which was written as a reaction to the audience’s perception of Paul Atreides as a hero. This is not what he wanted to do. My adaptation of Dune is closer to his idea and is actually a warning.
After the third film, Villeneuve intends to stop, also because he considers the rest of the novels far from his taste: “After this, the novels become more … esoteric.”
A possible third Dune film will obviously depend on the earnings of the second film, but in the meantime Villeneuve foresees that “a few words are already written on the paper”, expecting that some draft script has already been discarded…
“Dune. Part Two explores the mythical journey of Paul Atreides as he joins Chani and the Fremen on a path of vengeance against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Faced with a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, Paul takes on a mission to prevent a terrible future that only he can predict. Villeneuve directed the film from a screenplay co-written with John Speights based on Herbert’s novel.
