The trailer features Sharpe and Jackson as Craig Tiddle and Trevor Brock, rival shop assistants who sing songs full of phallic allusions and vulgar jokes. “Lady Boss” Megan T Stallion indicates that they may be twins, leading Craig and Trevor to realize they are “fucking identical twins”, referencing the original stage musical. They later try to trick their parents, played by Lane and Mullally, into getting back together. However, the father is gay and inexplicably keeps a cage with “sewer boys”, which he says is “gay culture”.
Dicks: The Musical, the first musical produced by A24, has a plot similar to “Just Look At The Sky” but with an R-rated twist. The film adaptation is directed by Larry Charles, the same Borat director, and produced by Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping, producers of The Greatest Showman. This is evident from the trailer, as the musical film combines Borat’s outrageous comedy with The Greatest Showman’s breathtaking musical numbers. Dicks: The Musical includes hits from the original show such as “Gay Old Life”, “All Love is Love”, “Out-Alpha the Alpha” and “The Sewer Song”.
The musical film is also paired with a top-notch cast. Lane is a three-time Tony Award winner for various Broadway productions, while Mullally won an Emmy for Will & Grace and has a background in Broadway musicals. Megan Thee Stallion’s musical prowess needs no further explanation, and Ian regularly demonstrates his musical prowess on Saturday Night Live. Dix: The great comedy, top-notch cast and promising premise of The Musical make it more than worthy of being A24’s first musical, hitting theaters on September 29th.
