Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic showed his prowess at the US Open, beating Borna Godjo 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 in straight sets to advance to the tournament quarter final. Djokovic, who has won three Grand Slam titles at Flushing Meadows, was perfect in this match.
Unlike the previous match when he was two sets behind, Djokovic took control from the start, committing just 12 unforced errors compared to his opponent’s 40. “It’s great to be able to advance in straight sets,” said Djokovic, who also pledged to replace Carlos Alcaraz as the ATP world No. 1 next week.
Djokovic’s next challenge will be against ninth seed Taylor Fritz, a 25-year-old Californian who has yet to drop a set in the tournament. Djokovic praised Fritz’s progress and is preparing for a tough game. It will be Djokovic’s 13th appearance in the quarter-finals in New York, while for Fritz it will be his first at this stage of the tournament.
On the women’s side, Iga Swiatek’s title defense ended with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 loss to Jelena Ostapenko. The defeat means Swiatek will lose his No. 1 spot in the WTA rankings next week, to be replaced by Aryna Sabalenka.
Another highlight of the day was the breakout of Coco Goff, who became the first American teenager to reach the quarterfinals in consecutive years since Serena Williams more than two decades ago.
