Following the daily arrests that have taken place in the West Bank since the outbreak of the war on 7 October, Palestinian activist Ahed Al-Mimi was arrested between Israel and the Palestinian factions.
The Israeli army announced on Monday that it had arrested the 22-year-old Palestinian woman, previously called the “Icon of Palestine”, on charges of “incitement to terrorism”.
“Terrorist Activities”
An army spokesperson said: “Ahed was arrested on suspicion of inciting violence and terrorist activities in the town of Nabi Saleh, and was referred to the Israeli security forces for further questioning.”
The Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, commented on the arrest of the Palestinian activist and the freed prisoner. He said in a post on his page on platform “X”: “Greetings to the army forces who arrested Ahed Tamimi, who was previously convicted of attacking soldiers, and she showed sympathy for the killers… We must not have patience with the saboteurs and those who support them.”
Arrest of Ahed Tamimi
Al-Tamimi was arrested on December 19, 2017, after a video circulated in which she appeared with her cousin, Nour Al-Tamimi, approaching two Israeli soldiers, asking them to leave the place and kicking and slapping them, in a scene that spread widely throughout the Arab world, and whose repercussions reached throughout the year.
Subsequently, an Israeli military court in Ofer prison in Ramallah handed down an 8-month prison sentence to the young woman, on charges of obstructing work and attacking Israeli soldiers.
The trial of the girl, who became a symbol of Palestinian resistance when she was arrested at the age of 16, received significant media coverage at the time.
Interestingly, Ahed was born on January 31, 2001 in the West Bank and has taken numerous positions in challenging the Israeli army authorities since she was eleven years old, when she first appeared in another video clip threatening an Israeli soldier with a punch , which attracted great popular attention.
