The Secretariat of Integrated Risk Management and Civil Protection issued a warning to two CDMX mayors after detecting that ash from Popocatepetl volcano was moving northwest of Mexico City.

The Washington Volcanic Ash Alert Center warned that the cities of Tlalpan and Milpa Alta were expected to report ash fall, SGIRP reported via its social networks.

“As per Popocatépetl’s monitoring report, movement of ash content to the northwest is observed. Expected ash decline along @GobMilpaAlta and @TlalpanAl dividing line,” he posted on the web.

Advice before ash falls

  • Stay indoors if possible, and cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or mask if you need to go outside.
  • If exposed to volcanic ash, wash eyes with plenty of water.
  • Do not exercise outdoors.
  • Keep children and the elderly out of volcanic ash.
  • Close doors and windows.
  • Seal cracks and vents with a damp rag.
  • Cover water tanks and other water tanks.
  • Cover patios and roof gutters.
  • Covers appliances, equipment and cars.
  • Keep removing ashes from the roof.
  • Volcanic ash can cause conjunctivitis and itchy eyes. Wear glasses and avoid contact lenses.
  • If you have been exposed to volcanic ash, wash your hands, eyes and face with plenty of clean or boiling water.
  • Skin irritation is rare, but can happen if the ash is acidic.
